Korai, a tiny village on the Agra–Fatehpur Sikri road, is a glimpse of real village life in India—both for the rare traveler and for Indians craving the simplicity of life in the village. Kalandhar: A Tradition Transformed Inhabited by the Kalandhar tribe, this village is home to a profoundly stirring story of tradition, resilience and transformation. A trip to Korai is much more than a sightseeing trip—it’s a culture shock as you are linked with yesterday’s tales and the simplicity of life in a village today.
Korai was also renowned for its separate bear-dance ritual many years ago. The villagers had a strong connection with the bears and dancing for tourists was their main source of income. As the years passed though, with legislation changes and the advent of conservation, so too did this lifestyle. Today, Korai is a beacon of change and promise, where erstwhile performers have transitioned to new means of subsistence, whilst retaining their cultural wealth.
Korai is a village in Fatehpur Sikri Tehsil of Agra District in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, India. It is only 32 km west of Agra and 8 km from Fatehpur Sikri, so it’s very accessible and an ideal stop on a Golden Triangle jaunt. The village is near Rajasthan border, nearby villages are Singarpur, Nagla Baharwati, Bharhkol, Malikpur and Daultabad. The nearest cities are Fatehpur Sikri, Achhnera, Bharatpur and Agra. Hindi is the main local language and the people are warm and hospitable.
Begin your trip with a relaxed pickup from your hotel, airport or railway station in Delhi or Agra. Enjoy air-conditioned private transportation along scenic country roads to Korai village.
Upon your arrival, your English speaking licensed guide will take you to the village and tell you about the history. Stroll down narrow paths bordered with traditional huts and get a good look at daily rural living. Watch villagers prepare their meals, fetch water and perform other daily tasks using simple, ingenious techniques.
Meet with local families to see how they live, what they eat, their festivals and the customs. Feel free to go try sweating pumping water from the hand pump, or sit with the villagers as they cook. Perhaps, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see a local festival, or a communal feast in the making.
Experience vibrant monkey dance shows, a traditional entertainment generations-old. Mohammad is the village wizard who entertains guests with his renowned magic and tales — favorite with children and families.
Korai is a photographer’s paradise. Take colorful portraits, make shots of idyllic country homes, bright faces and spontaneous moments of village life. There are so many incredible moments for powerfully meaningful travel photography in this experience.
After you spend some quality time in the village, drive back to your hotel in a comfortable vehicle with memories that are a bit more than just sightseeing.
