Visit Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah – History, Devotion & Culture

Your tour will commence with a convenient pickup from your hotel or Delhi airport in a private air-conditioned vehicle. With a licensed local guide, speaking English, continue to the Nizamuddin - one of the most culturally rich areas of Delhi.

Upon reaching the premises of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah, you will be surrounded by narrow alleys with smell of incense, sweet drizzle of rose petals and devotional chants which will make you believe that you are in the capsule of spirituality. The tomb of the saint, constructed in 1562, lies at the centre of a courtyard and is topped by a fine onion-shaped dome. It is covered with elaborate paintings and inlay work, and can be seen to advantage from the carved balustrade on the verandas.

The men are allowed inside the sanctum to pray, the women can only come outside to pay respects — a crucial cultural norm that your guide will gently explain. Nearby are the tombs of Amir Khusro and Princess Jahanara Begum, signifying the intertwining of spirituality, art, and the Mughals.

You will also be guided to name other prominent monuments in the complex, such as Jama’at Khana Masjid, Chini Ka Burj, Chaunsath Khamba, Ataga Khan’s Tomb, Mirza Ghalib’s Tomb, Khan-i-Khanan’s Tomb, Barapula, and fragments monuments of historic buildings Using Lal Mahal and Kalan Masjido.

Since If you are there on Thursday between 5–7 pm, you will be able to see the thrilling Qawwali session, Sufi singers chanting devotional poetry in praise of god. The shrine is the scene of the grand Urs festival twice a year marking the death anniversaries of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and Amir Khusro and drawing pilgrims from all corners of the earth.
