Varanasi, or Banaras, known in the Bible as Kashi, is one of the oldest and holiest cities in
India. It has been the epitome of Indian culture, philosophy, traditions, and spirituality
since time immemorial. This is one of the Sapta Puries, meaning the seven holy cities of
ancient India. The city is located on the banks of the Ganges River, which has two
tributaries in the city: Varuna and Assi, hence the name Varanasi. The combination of Kashi,
the holy city; Ganga, the sacred river; and Shiva, the supreme god, makes Varanasi an
immortal destination.
Today, Varanasi remains a center of cultural and sacred activities. In the field of learning,
especially religion, philosophy, yoga, Ayurveda, astrology, dance, and music, this city is
certainly unparalleled. Banarasi silk and brocade sarees are known worldwide for their
elegance. Varanasi is full of surprises at every corner. The more we explore it, the more we
love it!
The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has long been the last pilgrimage place for Hindus. Commonly
known as Banaras, Varanasi is the oldest inhabited city in the world. These few lines from
Mark Twain say it all: "Benara is older than history, older than tradition, older even than
legend, and seems twice as old as all of them put together. " Hindus believe that whoever
has the grace to die in the land of Varanasi will receive salvation and liberation from the
cycle of birth and death. The homeland of Lord Shiva and Parvati, Varanasi's origin is
unknown. The Ganges River in Varanasi is said to have the power to wash away human sins.
