Royal Gaitor Tumbas is the cremation ground of the Maharajas in Jaipur and is undoubtedly one of the calmest places to visit in the city. Situated in Brahmpuri, 15kms from Jaipur city at the foothills of Nahargarth Fort, this offbeat monument provides you a peek into royal customs and architectural elegance away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
While the forts and palaces in are packed with tourists in Jaipur, Royal Gaitor Tumbas remains serene tranquility; it’s an excellent spot to hang out on your own or with friends and family as you explore the lineage of the Rajasthan royal rulers. From here, there is a good view of the whole Jaipur city including distant views of Man Sagar Lake and Jal Mahal.
The word “Gaitor” is derived from the Hindi term “Gaye ka Thor”, which implies the place of repose of departed souls. As its name would suggest, the place is a royal cremation site, and Jaipur’s kings, on being put to flame, were honoured with cenotaphs (chhatris).
Each chhatri is unique; it represents the personality, the might and the artistic taste of the ruler commemorated. With elaborate carvings in colourful and majestic open pavilion, rather than being dark and gloomy, the site is infact a celebration of life, legacy and royal grandeur.
The cenotaphs of Royal Gaitor Tumbas are splendid specimens of Rajput architecture, harmoniously interwoven with Hindu and Islamic architectural features. These chhatris are open pavilions crowned with ornate domes resting on intricately carved pillars.
The most astonishing edifice is the cenotaph of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of jaipur. Made completely out of white marble, it is noted for its intricate carvings and elegant proportions. This cenotaph rests on 20 intricately carved pillars and is considered the most graceful of the place. The embellishment and quality of workmanship of each chhatri indicate the level of the ruler and his sense of aesthetics for whom it was made. The ornate construction testify to a fact that princes and kings of Jaipur made bloodlines met even their cremation grounds mirrored royal luxury.
Along with the cenotaphs of the kings, the pal also features memorials for the queens of Jaipur. These cenotaphs are situated at a distance to the Maharani Ki Chhatri complex, very near to the Ramgarh road crossing.
Every structure melds with the next in perfect harmony, creating a sacred space that marries beauty, history, and tranquility. Serene location and brilliant artistry of Royal Gaitor Tumbas makes it one of the best place to capture your camera roll, History Nerds, and travellers who look out for tranquil experiences.
You are welcome to photography at Royal Gaitor Tumbas but be prepared to pay a small fee for using a camera on site. The fullness and silence of the place make for a strong contrast with squawl of the streets, making it a good place to slow things down and get lost in thought.
Whether gazing at the intricate stone carvings or taking in the peaceful ambiance, this concealed treasure keeps coming back to your mind.
