Online Virtual Tour – Smithsonian Natural History Museum

Overview

The brief was to make the museum – now one of the largest and most visited in the world in New Delhi – the custodian of the artistic, historical and archaeological fruits of the Indian subcontinent. Concept of National Museum of the cultures under the banner of Kalanjali was propounded in May 1946 when Maurice Gwyer Committee drafted a plan for a museum at national level in Delhi.

The impetus to found the Museum was provided by the Exhibition of Indian Art at Burlington House, London, in 1947–48, sponsored by the Royal Academy in collaboration with the Governments of India and Britain. In 1949, the collection was exhibited at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi, before the exhibits were sent back to their own museums. This exhibition was a great success and it inspired the formation of the National Museum.

Tour Itinerary

Arrival & Entry

You will start your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi in a private air-conditioned vehicle. When you enter the National Museum, your guide will orient you to the layout of the museum and its historical significance.

Museum Overview & Galleries

The magnificent palace structure contains more than 2,06,000 artefacts on three vast floors, portraying 5,000 years of Indian history – from the prehistoric era to the present day. An early gallery displays items of the Harappan Civilization, such as seals, pottery, terracotta figurines, beads, tools, and ancient jewellery. These treasures reveal interesting aspects of one of the world’s earliest urban cultures.

Archaeological Galleries

The Archaeological pantheon Gallery includes approximately 800 Holocene bronze, stone, and terracotta sculptures. These masterpieces are dated 3rd century BC to the 19th century AD and represent the development of Indian art in Mauryan, Gupta, Kushan, and medieval style.

Buddhist Art & Sacred Relics

The National Museum is very famous for it’s Collection of Buddhist Art including the sacred relics of Lord Buddha received from many countries. These halls bring to light the spiritual density, symbolism, and artistic mastery of Buddhist schools in all of Asia.

Miniature Paintings Gallery

Miniature A separate and well-regarded section is devoted to Indian miniature painting in Deccani, Pahari, Central Indian and Rajasthani traditions. Painted between 1000 AD and 1900 AD, presentations will have Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagwat Purana, Vishnu Purana, Baramasa and Panchatantra them. I guess they really are guides to India epics and folklores.

Time at Leisure

Alongside the major galleries are collections for textiles, arms and armor, manuscripts, tribal arts, and decorative arts. Like a national museum of natural history virtual tour or the smithsonian national museum of natural history virtual tour but better, this one is real life. The observation that “U should stay at least one whole day if you wanna get the whole dig museum experience” still holds, but sadly, that is not feasible for most.
