Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning group of temples that are
renowned for their intricate and exquisite erotic carvings. These temples are located in the
town of Khajuraho in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India.
Khajuraho, also spelled Khajraho or old Kharjuravahaka, is a historic town in north Madhya
Pradesh state, central India. It is a famous tourist and archaeological site with carved
temples dedicated to the patriarchs Shiva, Vishnu, and Jaina. The ruins of Khajuraho were
declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
Khajuraho, or Kharjuravahaka, was one of the capitals of the Chandela kings, who from the 9th
to 11th centuries CE developed a vast kingdom, Jejakabhukti (Jijhoti). At its peak,
Jejakabhukti included almost the entire state of present-day Madhya Pradesh, centered on the
historical region of Bundelkhand. The original capital spanned an area of about 8 square
miles (21 square kilometers) and included about 85 temples, built by successive rulers from
about 950 to 1050. By the end of the 11th century, Chandela, during a time of chaos and
decline, had moved to a hill fort elsewhere. Khajuraho continued its religious importance
until the 14th century but was then largely forgotten. Its remoteness perhaps saved it from
the desecration that Muslim conquerors, or Mughals, often inflicted on Hindu monuments. In
1838, British army captain T.S. Burt, by chance, came across information that led him to
rediscover the temple complex in the Khajuraho forest.
Historical Significance: The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a collection of
20 temples built between 950 and 1050 AD during the Chandela dynasty. These temples are
celebrated for their architectural and artistic achievements, showcasing a unique blend of
Hindu, Jain, and Aryan styles.
Architectural: The temples are known for their stunning architecture,
including intricately carved sandstone facades, shikharas (spires), and ornate sculptures.
These sculptures are noted for their depiction of various aspects of life, including love
and sexuality, in addition to mythological and religious themes.
Erotic Sculptures: While the erotic sculptures are perhaps the most famous
feature of the Khajuraho temples, they make up only a small portion of the overall artwork.
These depictions are seen as a celebration of human life and love, and they are integrated
into a broader narrative of the human experience.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Khajuraho Group of Monuments was designated
a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its exceptional art and architecture. It is
considered one of India's most important cultural treasures.
Annual Dance Festival: Khajuraho hosts an annual week-long dance festival in
February, featuring classical Indian dance forms. The event is held against the backdrop of
the beautifully illuminated temples, providing a spectacular cultural experience.
Local Culture: Besides the temples, Khajuraho offers an opportunity to
experience local culture and crafts. Visitors can explore traditional markets and interact
with the friendly local population.
Tourist Attractions: While the temples are the primary attraction, Khajuraho
also offers other interesting sites, such as the Raneh Falls, Panna National Park, and the
Archaeological Museum. Khajuraho is not only a site of historical and architectural
significance but also a place where one can appreciate the intricate artistry of ancient
India. The temples continue to draw visitors from around the world who are fascinated by
their beauty and the stories they tell through their intricate carvings.
